26-Apr-04   march on washington?
yesterday, march 25, 2004 was the date of the march on washington in support of women's right to choose/government's right to stay the fuck out of it. i was unable to attend, but was curious how it went, as i have been getting phone calls and emails from organizers for the past few months. i'm sure some of you have as well.

since i don't have access to a television or receive the newspaper, i usually get my up-to-date news online. every time i log on to aol, i see flashes of very important news stories. today they are: Sting has a new music video in which he "snatches a stolen car"; "How to save your wardrobe"; and Mrs. Kerry's taxes kept secret. There is also a link to "Three US Troops Killed in Iraq."

Hmm. i have been online periodically throughout the day and haven't seen anything about the march! i actually forgot that there was a march until just now, 8:48 p.m. I decide to do some net-surfing to see who is reporting on the march, and how it went.

I checked cnn.com, foxnews.com, washingtonpost.com, and msn.com. lets take a vote now. how many of you think that even one of these had even a link to an article about the march on its homepage? anyone?

NOT ONE -- NOT EVEN THE WASHINGTON POST -- HAD EVEN A LINK ON ITS HOMEPAGE TO AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE MARCH. NOT ONE.

so you think, wow, maybe it was a really busy newsday. ha! yeah right. looking at the homepages, we find out that:

Missing girl found under tarp, bound in duct tape (cnn)

'Schindler' co-producer guilty in bribery scandal (cnn)

California cops want spider guns (cnn)

U.S.-Turkish team hope to show object is Noah's Ark (cnn)

Cate Blanchett gives birth to a son (cnn)

Michael Jackson replaces attorneys (msn)

It's a boy for Cate Blanchett (msn: just in case you missed it on cnn)

North Carolina Teen promotes own homosexuality in high school election (fox)

Cate Blanchett Gives Birth to a Son (fox - in case you missed it on cnn & msn)

Brooke Shields Pens Postpartum Depression Book (fox)

granted -- these are all very important pieces of news -- but i wonder WHY the march is omitted. at the end of the day, i realize that those who weren't at the march will not be inspired by the intense empowerment that existed in that moment in time, nor will they be motivated to speak up, step up, and mobilize.

american women who were not at the march learn instead that michael jackson fired his lawyers, estee lauder died, and cate blanchett had a boy boy boy. once again we realize that those who write the history books LEAVE SHIT OUT -- intentionally or not -- that would provide us with motivation, solidarity, and agency.

i can't help but wonder a couple of things.

1. how much news is hidden and why?

2. does the american public really think Really Think REALLY THINK that cate blanchett's family life is NEWS???
